November 13, 2017 – The Assistance League of Los Angeles’ Operation School Bell rolls up to public schools in L.A. with their new 48-foot Featherlite trailer. By the time they leave, up to 300 K-5 students — from low-income families to even homeless children — leave with new school uniforms, shoes, socks, jackets, underwear, books and more. The group strives to leave each child with a week’s worth of new clothes.
A Featherlite customer since 2003, the group’s roots go back to Hollywood actresses who, in 1919, wanted to give back to the community. Now 150-women strong, and part of the philanthropist Anne Banning Auxiliary, Operation School Bell served 6,200 school children in 2016 — 40% of whom were homeless.
“Our Featherlite unit is kid-friendly, with plenty of storage, racks of clothes, four changing rooms, a ramp for loading carts of clothes and a 20-foot slideout for even more room,” explained Kathryn Balzer, Chairman of Operation School Bell. “It was a pure pleasure working with Featherlite on the new trailer. They had great suggestions, awesome technical help and service and plenty of patience for our questions and evolving needs along the way.
